If you don't know it, don't show it.
So I just bought a shiny new monitor and as you can imagine I am eagerly anticipating it's arrival. I got an email update from Dell letting me know I could check the status of my order. When I got to the page it said "Shipped 08/08/2006". Awesome!!! And then I noticed on the side bar it said
Estimated Delivery Date is:8/10/06
Any estimated delivery date contained in this "Order Status" section is for information purposes only. Changes to the "Shipped by date" shown may occur. We recommend that you visit this site again 24 hours prior to the date provided for confirmation and further updates.
Well it's 5:30pm on the 10th and no monitor so I call Dell and after 20min on hold they tell me it won't be arriving until the 18th!
So I know the estimated date is "for information purposes only" but if it's that far off why show it all. I would much rather just have a Fed-Ex tracking number.

Are you listening, Dell blog people?
I had a dream about your new monitor last night. It was trapped in a time continuum!
Yes, Dell is squandering goodwill with such things. Especially with their dumb redoing of their site. Yeah, I feaking love having to decide if I'm a small business or personal every time. I'm both!
Bagh, then again, who else do we turn to for computers? Me: I say College/Spadina.
I think Dell blog people might be getting held up with boardroom intrigue.
Having just bought a Dell Inspiron I've had to have a number of conversations with their Indian call centres to specify the machine (for instance to get XP loaded rather than Vista), to organise delivery and subsequently using IM and remote support to correct some of the delivery settings. In all cases the support has been absolutely outstanding - delivered with intelligence, total commitment and no end of patience and humility - particularly when I became the customer from hell after having huge difficulty in actually getting it delivered because of the total and utter ineptitude of their delivery partner.
